Livelines programme broadcast April 1st regarding friday nights incident over Askeaton, DC8 with engine trouble causing panic in residents of Askeaton was discussed, what started out as focusing on Askeaton's near miss was sidetracked by focusing on putting blame on Shannon faciliting American aircraft & wanting to know what cargo plane was transporting. I don't think residents of Askeaton would have cared what was on board if plane had crashed in town. What should have been asked was why ATC allowed plane to fly over town when in trouble at altitude barely skirting over buildings & causing houses to shake & people to grab children to flee houses in panic.
It came across that Liveline used this incident to give a platform to the antiwar people!

Bear in mind the average joe soap knows little about aviation in such a sense, and sensationlised it "barely skirting over buildings" and so on.
Further, controllers radar does not have 'ASKEATON' written over askeaton, or any place name for that matter

What i believe happened is the aircraft landed at Shannon and refueled than took off but shortly after take off the aircraft had engine problems and returned to Shannon if this is true and the aircraft took off and landed on 24 than the pilot would have to fly over askeaton to return to Shannon

the DC8 WAS VERY VERY LOW OVER ASKEATON,BUT THE PROBLEM IS THE PRESS HAS GONE AND TURNED THE HOLE THING ON IT'S HEAD.

a dc8 has 4 engine and is designed to be able to fly with just 3 so the chance of it crashing in askeaton was very low it was probably the quickest way back to Shannon for the aircraft
at the end of the day no one was hurt and that's the main thing and if the press want to make a big deal about it that's their problem
in my view if it was a passenger aircraft with innocent lives on board than a lot of peoples views would be different
